How Fast Should You Breathe Asleep? A Partner’s Guide to Counting
You don’t need a gadget to check your breathing in the night. A partner, a quiet room and a clock will do.
Here’s what a normal count looks like, and what a change means.
Count It Like A Pro
Watch the chest or belly for a full minute while the sleeper rests. Most healthy adults breathe about 12 to 19 times a minute asleep, and the average is about 15.4 (Natarajan 2021).
Sleep stage barely changes the number. One study found about 16.6 breaths a minute awake, 15.2 in light sleep, 15.1 in deep sleep and 16.4 in REM (Zhang 2014).
What A Jump Means
Your own baseline matters most. In the same wearable data, many people with COVID-19 had at least one night with a rate 3 breaths a minute above their usual (Natarajan 2021).
In 37 healthy adults tracked by a bedside radar, nightly averages stayed steady and every big deviation matched a self-reported illness (Toften 2022).

What Counting Can’t Tell You
A normal rate doesn’t rule out sleep apnea, because apnea shows up as pauses and oxygen dips. Learn the warning signs of sleep apnea if your partner hears gasping.
The rate holds steady, but each breath shrinks. Minute ventilation drops about 14 to 19% from waking to sleep because tidal volume falls (Krieger 1990).
Gadgets Versus Eyes
A wrist or ring tracker averaged about half a breath per minute of error in one study, and a chest accelerometer about 1.8 (Ryser 2022). Either one is fine for watching a trend.
