Nasal Strips for Snoring: A Straight Answer Before You Buy a Box

A nasal strip is the cheapest snoring fix on the shelf, and one of the most misunderstood. It helps some snorers a lot and others not at all.

For a broader plan before you buy anything, see our partner-tested order of operations for stopping snoring.

Thinking about taping the lips instead? Our partner guide to mouth tape weighs what the studies show.

The difference comes down to one question: is your nose the narrow part of your airway?

What A Strip Actually Does

It’s a spring-backed adhesive band that lifts the sides of your nostrils. That widens the front of the nose and lowers resistance, but only if the nose was the bottleneck.

In a test of 20 healthy adults, only 9 saw a real drop in nasal resistance, and those 9 started with higher resistance (Kirkness 2000).

Who Gets A Quieter Night

In a placebo-controlled trial of 12 non-obese people with chronic rhinitis, the real strip meant fewer snores per hour, 173 versus 258 (Pevernagie 2000). Loudness and sleep quality didn’t change.

If your snore whistles, gets worse with colds, or comes with a stuffy nose, you fit the profile. A deep rumble with a clear nose points to your throat instead.

Who Should Skip It

Pooled data on 496 people found no meaningful change in apnea index, snoring index or oxygen levels with dilators (Alotaibi 2026). A strip doesn’t treat sleep apnea.

If you gasp, choke or feel wrecked all day, start with our warning signs of sleep apnea. A strip is not a stand-in for a sleep test.

Run A One-Week Test

Press the strip across your nostrils on clean, dry skin, and ask your partner to rate the noise for seven nights. Sensitive skin can redden, so switch brands if it stings.
